Just before 2020 rang in, I won an award for Best Nightlife Entertainment at the 19th annual Toronto Nightclub Awards - which is crazy because I didn't even know this event even existed and because burlesque is so niche, it blew my mind that Toronto had embraced it and me with open arms. The reason this award means anything to me is that it gives me hope that this city will open its collective mind to the forward-thinking ideals carried forth through the burlesque community. We can all afford to listen and discuss what's going on in the underground as much as we revere popular writings from the greats.
